SUPPORT HEALTHY, SAFE ENVIRONMENTS IN PIERCE COUNTY
For more than 30 years, Safe Streets has been a hub for community organizing and grassroots activism.
Today, every donation still strengthens programs that empower people so they can initiate positive, concrete changes in their neighborhoods, schools, and families.
Through neighborhood groups, neighbors create safer, healthier, more welcoming places to live, work, and play.
Through Youth Leading Change groups, youth develop leadership and social-emotional skills that help them stand up, speak out, and make changes at school and at home.
WHERE DO THE DOLLARS GO?
Donations pay for our mobilization specialists, who organize groups, train community members, support existing neighborhood work, and encourage leaders.
Dollars also help us keep our organization afloat. They go towards office expenses and support staff, who build and maintain the systems that keep our front-line mobilizers up-to-date and connected.
Your gifts empower members of the community.
Here are a few ways your donations have made a measurable, impactful difference:
NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
The Lackamas Valley Safe Streets neighborhood group led a community cleanup in Pierce County that freed an elderly community member from the burden of clearing a massive dumping site located on her property.
A group of squatters left 6,000 pounds of debris strewn across her backyard, a health hazard she was powerless to deal with alone.
Together, people in the community came together to get rid of the blight and help a neighbor in need.
Pierce County Code Enforcement provided a litter credit for up to 2,000 pounds of trash.
A neighbor covered the remaining dump fees.
The Lackamas Valley group recruited volunteers and coordinated a massive community cleanup.
Today, this member of our community lives on trash-free property and the community enjoys closer relationships after bonding over the common good.
STANDING UP, SPEAKING OUT
George Conzuelo started out as a member of one of Safe Streets’ Youth Leading Change high school groups.
As a student, he learned leadership skills, such as public speaking and how to work collaboratively with a wide variety of people.
Eventually, he spoke in front of the Tacoma City Council, where he spoke eloquently about the importance of voting on National Voting Registration Day.
‘You vote whether or not you cast a ballot,” he said. “If you don’t vote, you leave your life in the hands of other people.”
His words earned George, then 17 years old, a standing ovation from the entire council.
Recently, George served as a Safe Streets intern, where he’s putting his skills to work to help the community every day. He now is serving on the Pierce County Birth to 25 Advisory Board, which will will develop a long range plan to ensure healthy youth development in Pierce County. Keep an eye on him as he looks toward a future in public office.
We’re so grateful for people like him, who are making a difference by getting involved every day.
