On April 23rd, Safe Streets partnered with different organizations to bring the second Conference for Neighborhood leaders to fruition. This event was created to respond to the needs of youth and neighborhood leaders by providing them with opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge, and relationships to reduce violence and realize sustainable positive change in their communities.
While at the event, Safe Streets members and experts from the community worked with neighbors to inspire a different perspective of what makes a neighborhood successful and increase their ability to include all members of the community.
The impact of this conference on the participants is already visible. We have received positive comments about the enthusiasm of our members, the impact of our information on neighborhood leaders, and how our conference has motivated attendees to help create the vision of a safer community. One attendee also said, “As a group we are re-developing what our vision is by incorporating new ideas in our meetings as well as heavily encouraging new neighbors to attend.”
With great appreciation, we would like to thank Tacoma Public Schools for allowing us to use their facilities. We would also like to thank the Nursing and Urban Studies departments of the University of Washington, Community Health Improvement Plan of Pierce County, MultiCare, the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, Bold Solutions, and the Washington Aggression Interruption Training program.
Thank you for your support and we are very excited to see the outcome of our neighborhood conference.
